This week we had a visit from an ex-pupil of the school Mrs Kathleen Jones Leftly. She attended the school during wartime (leaving in 1942). She lived in Winder and went to Whitehaven Grammar after attending Arlecdon. She spoke to the children about what the school was like in the past and what it was like in the time of war. She remembered that the Headteacher lived in the school house ( now our WRAP and offices) and he was a strict and stern man. He gave her the cane for talking during lessons!
She remembered that there wasn't a school hall but three classrooms in the Juniors. She remembered milk sitting by open fires in the classrooms to get the frost off! She said that they playground was separated into girls and boys.
She told us that evacuees were in the school during the war and they were from South Shields. They were taught separately from the local children. She remembers clothing coupons and rations.
She told the children to keep reading, to learn languages and to travel in the future.
