This year we have been working with the ‘Phunky foods’ scheme as part of our drive to improve the health and wellbeing of our children. Our healthy cooking club in November was very popular.
A key focus this year is on healthy packed lunches and to provide advice for parents of the healthy options available to replace less-healthy ones.
A review of packed lunches in school showed a variety of foods were on offer to students. We would advise parents to limit the amount of high sugar/ salt options. Some pupils were receiving a daily allowance of both of these in this one meal! We would suggest considering swapping or enhancing the lunch with additional portions of fruit or raw vegetables. Moreover amounts of protein were generally low, consider meat products, eggs, cheese, lentils or similar to ensure amounts of protein are at recommended levels.
