NEW MESSAGE FROM MRS FARISH

So - we have reached the last week of term!

I will still be setting work this week on this page. There are some activities I have added below which will last all week - My End of Year Journal, and End of Year task cards. You can choose to do parts of these each day, until you have completed them.

Carry on checking in each day, as you have been, to see what tasks I have set. Zoom lessons for children at home will continue, but times may vary - please check for invitations by email.

Remember, you can email me with any queries, or to send scores or photographs of completed work, at ;

farishk@westlakesmat.org.uk

I still miss you all and hope you are keeping safe and well x

Good morning everyone!

Today will be the last work of the term I will set. There are Maths booklets uploaded, which recap the work we have done recently on our basic skills in addition and subtraction, fractions and place value.

These booklets can be done over the course of today and tomorrow morning.

I will also run a Zoom session this afternoon so I can see the children at home :)

Have a lovely day x

ENGLISH

Zoom lesson at 11am

If you can't join the lesson;

This week, we are going to look at an excerpt from a book called " The Dark", by Lemony Snicket.

Have a look at the illustration below, and read the text.

What do you think is happening in the picture?

? How does it make you feel?

Think about the word afraid. What does this mean? How is it similar to and different from scared or frightened?

Look carefully at the illustration of Lazlo. How can you tell he is afraid? Look at the direction of his gaze and body position. He is not playing with his toys anymore. What has caught his attention?

Think about what might have been happening before this. What do you think Lazlo has been doing? How do you think he was feeling before the sun started to set? Do you think he knew the dark was coming? Look at the torch beside him. Why do you think he has this here? What does this tell you about him and his fear?

Now, look at the way the dark is shown on the page. What has the illustrator done to make it seem scary? Look and talk to someone about the space it takes up, the shapes it makes on the page and the fact Lazlo has his back to the dark. How do all these things work together to make you feel about the dark, or to show why Lazlo might be afraid of it?

I would like you to write a list of adjectives, descriptive noun phrases or sentences to describe the dark, or how it looks.

For example;

The dark was creeping up on Lazlo, like a silent bear.

Think about the local wildlife you can see in and around your home or the school. You might look for birds outside your window, insects and minibeasts on the windowsill or in the garden or yard, in the paths, grass, bushes and trees around your home. You may even spot a fox!

Keep a wildlife diary over the period of a week, drawing and writing about any of the wildlife you spot. You might write about what it looks like, how it moves, what time or where you saw it, or any other information you can find out about each creature. Can you think of descriptive phrases ( like" salt and pepper wings" or " speckled and freckled" ) for the creatures you spot?  Share what you have found with other people in your home or at school. Have they seen the same, or any other creatures?

What if the peppered moths wanted to camouflage in your home or classroom?

Where is the best place for them to rest? Why?

You could try this out. Look at the peppered moth you have made. Place it somewhere you think it would be camouflaged.

Does it work? Would someone else be able to find it easily? Try somewhere else.

What if your peppered moth had to change to stay camouflaged? Which places make terrible hiding places? Why? What if you could make a moth to match this background? What would it look like now?

Here are some examples of how creatures can camouflage themselves. They're amazing!

https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/wacky-weekend/hidden-animals/#/ww-camouflage-katydid.jpg

Create a set of moths that can be camouflaged in different places in your home or classroom. See how long they can stay hidden.

What would you call these new moths you have created? Have another look at the webpage from yesterday to find some ideas as to different moth names.

ENGLISH/ ART

Yesterday, we looked at the picture, text and front cover of the book, The Moth.

Today's task is called, " Illustrate It". As you did yesterday, you can write your ideas down as you go along.

Look at the illustrations of the peppered moths on the picture I uploaded yesterday. What do you notice about them?

If you were going to draw a picture of a peppered moth, what would you include?

What is special about them? How would you describe the patterning on the wings? Are all the moths the same as each other? What is the same? What shape are the wings? What do the antennae look like?

Can you draw or paint your own peppered moths like the ones in this book?

Fold a sheet of paper in half and draw half of the shape of the moth, with the body along the fold, so that the moth remains together. Now cut around the shape so you end up with a symmetrical shape. Now decorate it so it looks like the moths in the book. Please send me a photograph of the finished moth :)

We are going to look at excerpts from a book called The Moth, by Isabel Thomas and Daniel Egnéus.

You can write your answers to these questions down in your yellow book, or on paper.

Scroll down, and have a look at the picture below.

The text on it says

Every year the same thing happens.

Hundreds of tiny eggs hatch.

The moths with the best camouflage survive

long enough to have children and pass on their salt and pepper wings.

This is why most peppered moths were speckled and freckled.

Until the world began to change.

Can you see the moths in the picture? Were there any interesting words or any that you don’t know in the text? Do you know what camouflage means? Look at the moths again. Where is the best place for them to hide? What makes you think this? How is the moth similar to the tree bark?

Scroll down and look at The Moth book cover. Do you agree that ‘speckled and freckled’ is a good description? How would you describe the moth?

Look again at the first picture and move your eye from left to right. Look how it changes from fresh green leaves and pale tree trunks to black sooty chimneys. What will the smoke do to the tree trunks?
What will happen to the moths if the tree trunks turn black with soot? Will they still be camouflaged? What would have to change for them to remain camouflaged? This is a story about how moths changed to keep up with the changes in the world. Do you know anything else about how any other animals have changed over time?

YEAR 3

Using a thesaurus. You used a thesaurus last week for our kindness cloud. They are such useful resources. Perhaps you could use one for the afternoon activity, too!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zh2xhbk

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY - GEOGRAPHY

Yesterday, I asked you to think about a really exciting/interesting place you have visited, and to find out some information about it.

Today I would like you to create a poster all about that place. Make it as colourful as you can, and see if you can make me want to visit the place, too, once I have read your exciting information about it! You can use pictures and photographs to show what the place looks like.

JUST FOR FUN

Ask each member of your household to grab a towel. Can you make it look like an elephant's head? Remember the trunk and the large ears! Please send me photographs of the completed towel sculptures!

Have a look at these towel sculptures. They are such fun!

You could ask people in your family, look at holiday photographs, books or use the internet. Next draw a picture of all or part of the place and show it to someone in your family and tell them all about it too.  Include any information that you have discovered.

Tomorrow you will be creating a poster about the place you have chosen.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

Following on from our kindness cloud activity, think of one of your friends and then draw a picture of them. You might like to add a frame and a title for example; ‘My Fantastic Friend ……….’

Then on the back of your drawing write a description of them. Include these details within your writing: the name of your friend, what they look like, what they like doing and why they are your friend. Perhaps they are your friend because you share the same interests or because they make you laugh.

Remember, in a description , you need to use interesting and exciting adjectives and if they are in a list format make sure that you use commas in between. Think about how you can organise your writing using paragraphs or even sub-headings.

Friendships are very important to us. Have a look at the video ‘Ben the dog and Duggie the dolphin’ when you click on the link below. It tells us all about an unusual friendship between two animals.

https://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/unlikely-animal-friends

Then see if you can answer the following questions:

What do Duggie and Ben like to do together?

What does the word ‘exhaustion’ mean?

What does Duggie the dolphin do to help Ben when he is tired?

JUST BECAUSE IT'S FUN...

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

Following on fro your kindness cloud,  we are going to make a word cloud. A word cloud is a picture of something but instead of colouring it in you fill the inside of the picture with words in lots of different colours. The theme for our word cloud is: Friendship and Kindness

You will need: a piece of paper, a pencil, some coloured pens or pencils

Start by drawing a big heart in the middle of your paper, try to fill as much of the paper as you can. Now, you can start to fill up the heart with words, think about what it means to be a good friend and to be kind. You might choose words like: FRIENDS, LOVE, CARING, SHARE, BE KIND. You could add the names of your family and friends if you like. Write them in pencil first so you can correct any mistakes and when you are happy go back over the words in colour – one colour for each word. If you want to make it look more exciting, write some words VERY BIG and other words very small.

While we are thinking about kindness, watch this video and think about the words. How does it make you feel when someone is kind to you? Can you think of some ways you could be more kind in the future? Try to think of at least one thing you can do from now on that you think will make you an even kinder friend - even though I know you are already fantastic!

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

MUSIC

Listen to the song ‘We Will Rock You’ by Queen (this can be found on YouTube or ask a grown up to find it for you). This is an example of ROCK music. It is my granddaughter, Maia's favourite song at the moment :) She loves to clap and stamp along to it. Listen to the beat and try to do it yourself through the song – tap tap clap, tap tap clap. This is called a repeating pattern. Can you compose your own repeating pattern? You can use clapping, tapping, stamping, instruments or your voice to create your beat.  You can make instruments at home, like a pot or pan for a drum, dry pasta in an empty bottle to make a shaker. Challenge someone else at home to make their own repeated pattern then perform them together – do they sound good? Do you need to change something to make it sound better?

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

KINDNESS CLOUD

Our friends and family are very important to us. I know you miss seeing your friends, as I miss seeing all of you. This is a reminder of how lovely our friends or family are.

Cut out a cloud shape.

Choose a member of your family or friend and write their name in the cloud.

Cut out some strips of paper in the colours of the rainbow. If you don’t have coloured paper you could cut your strips from white paper and colour them in or paint them.

Think of words that are kind and best describe the person you have chosen.

When you have thought of the words you would like to use,  could you use a thesaurus and choose another word that means the same thing? See if you can find words you would not usually use.

I have added the link of an online thesaurus that you could use.

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-thesaurus

Just type your word in the large search bar and it will list all alternative words with the same meaning.

On each strip of paper write the adjectives that best describe your friend or family member.

Please take a photograph of your kindness cloud and send it to me

Well done for everything you have done this week.

Here are today's tasks;

POTATO PRINTING

You will need to ask an adult for help when cutting the shape into the potato. I will be interested to see what patterns you come up with!

SHAKE IT OUT

Put on your favourite song. Make up your own dance and dance around the house or garden. Sing along!

PAPER PLAY

Make an origami hummingbird

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn2iLmwvZPk

Try a food you've never tried before. Even if you're not sure you'll like it it's always good to try something new. You never know what you might have been missing out on!

CALL A FRIEND

Why not call a friend, or a few friends, on the phone, Facetime, Skype, Zoom? Have a chat!

WRITE A LETTER

You could write a letter to someone you are missing. Tell them all about what you have been doing since you last saw them

THURSDAY 14 MAY

Good morning! I am so glad you had fun with the activities yesterday!

Here are some more suggestions;

INSTRUCTIONS

Can you find anything in  your home that has instructions with it?

What do the instructions do?

Can you give someone in your house instructions on how to do something? It could be how to brush their teeth, how to play a game, how to get dressed...

GET YOUR BAKE ON

Can you bake something? Or make something simple to eat? A cake? A sandwich? Toast and jam? Ask an adult to help you. They will need to give you instructions! :)

CANDID CAMERA

Can you make a little video of yourself saying hello to your classmates? Send it to me by email and I will put them together so that everyone can say hello to each other.

SPLASH TIME

Get some different sized containers. Experiment in water. Which container holds the most? Which holds the least? How many of one container does it take to fill another? Do any of the containers have measurements on them? What are they? Why are they there?

You could do this at bath time, or in a paddling pool outside if you have one. The kitchen sink is also fine.

LISTEN CAREFULLY

Close your eyes and sit quietly. What can you hear? Concentrate on each sound. What is happening? Can you picture it? How many different sounds are there?

Have fun!!

WEDNESDAY 13 MAY

Good morning

The activities for the rest of this week are going to be a little bit different.

I am going to leave some suggestions here for activities you can do. All you have to do is choose any, or all of them to do and send me an email to let me know what you have been busy with.

You are all working very hard and I know at times you find it quite difficult to settle to work when you are not in the classroom.

You can continue with Joe Wicks and Miss Steer's Mindfulness. The links are also still below if you want to carry on with some White Rose Maths and BBC Bitesize.

I would like you to do some research about VE Day. Can you find out some facts about it, and then write about it?

I have given you a start, by posting some information on the class page. You could use Google, look at books, ask your parents, ring your grandparents or great grandparents.

You can set out your information however you like - a fact file, a leaflet, a non chronological report, a set of sentences.

I look forward to reading them!

I have set a 2Do on Purple Mash for you. The task is to write a diary entry about your day, or your weekend.

Think back to when we were reading Traction Man and you wrote a diary entry as Traction Man, about what he had done that day.

You will use the words "I "and "my" as you are writing about yourself. This is called writing in the first person.

You will be writing in the past tense, as you are telling me about something that has already happened.

Remember to write the date at the top.

Year 1 - I would like at least 4 sentences, with capital letters and full stops.

Year 2 - I would like at least 6 sentences, with capital letters, full stops, and some sentences being joined with and, but, so or because. ( conjunctions)

Year 3 -  I would like at least 10 sentences, with capital letters, full stops, commas in lists, and some sentences being joined with and, so, or, but because or when. ( conjunctions)

HISTORY

I have set you a 2Do on Purple Mash, to describe your favourite toy.

Today's task - decide what you are going to write your report about. Talk to someone at home about your ideas and write down all of the information you think you could include in your report, in your yellow book. Then create a word bank of important and interesting vocabulary.

Tomorrow, I will remind you of the features of a non chronological report.
